CAN YOU GUESS WHICH OF THESE EMPLOYEES LIVES ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM?
MOST PEOPLE CAN'T, HOWEVER, RECENT STATISTICS INDICATE THAT AS MANY AS 1 IN 68 NORTH AMERICANS LIVES ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM. CHANCES ARE RIGHT NOW, YOU ARE WORKING WITH AT LEAST ONE PERSON WHO LIVES WITH AUTISM, ASPERGER'S OR NON VERBAL DISORDER.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a title used to describe an 'invisible disability'. More often than not, people living on the spectrum attempt to hide the diagnosis from employers and co-workers fearing the stigma of popular opinion. Unfortunately, the nature of the condition makes it hard to hide, and even if a person does disclose that they have this type of disability, most managers, supervisors and HR personnel have no idea how to make appropriate accommodations.
